Caregiver Amanda Fisher began her position in April of this year at Qualicare Whitby, and she’s already making an impact! After looking for a job where she “gives to others” Amanda says she “hasn't looked back” and is currently caring for 9 different clients. Amanda works with individuals with dementia, and provides Palliative and personal care. She says, “I believe that if you provide care to others the way you would want someone to provide care to your loved ones, it helps you be a great caregiver.”

What led you to working as a caregiver at Qualicare?

Amanda Fisher: The majority of my career has been working in the Developmental Sector supporting adults with dual diagnosis also working as a Supervisor of PSWs providing home care support.
I was looking for a part-time job that's flexible with hours and that was giving back to others. After interviewing with the manager, who was very welcoming, the position just felt right.

How do you help clients feel comfortable with in-home caregiving?

Amanda Fisher: The first thing that comes to mind is that I am going into a client's home. This is their safe place. Yes, it happens to be my workplace. However, I am going into their home, and I need to be respectful each and every time.
I think the most important thing as a care provider, to help clients feel comfortable, is that I provide care that gives the client dignity and respect. I always ask for consent and ask how the client prefers the care provided. This gives them the opportunity to change their mind.

How has your relationship with clients made an impact on your life?

Amanda Fisher: A few of the clients that I have provided support and care to are the most positive and resilient people that I have met. It is not a matter of feeling sorry for the clients, but I listen to the challenges that they have overcome, and that they have chosen to have a positive outlook on life instead of a negative one. It helps to put a perspective on things and what you can and cannot control.

What personal qualities make a great caregiver?

Amanda Fisher: To be a great caregiver, being attentive and having patience is key, along with having a passion to help others. Kindness goes a long way as well. For someone considering starting a career as a caregiver, I recommend knowing what your passions are, and what kinds of care you are comfortable providing. I would also say that being able to accept feedback from others is important, as every client and individual does not have the same routine. Being a caregiver is rewarding on a personal level. Knowing that you have impacted someone's day, even in the slightest positive way, is what it is all about!

In what ways does Qualicare support your career?

Amanda Fisher: Being employed by Qualicare has been nothing but positive. I feel lucky that I have gotten to meet the clients I have, and that they have shared their stories with me. And the support that I have received from Qualicare during my time with them has been nothing but positive and supportive. Whenever I've had a question or concern, it has been addressed quickly. They believe in caregivers having a work/life balance and ensuring that caregivers are not burnt out. I do feel appreciated and valued working here.
